Roofmeadow ®Type III: Savannah

Irrigation: Temporary (establishment period)

Size: 6,000 square feet

Client: Homeowner

Location: Medina, WA

Roofscapes Contractor: Teufel Landscaping

Status: First stage completed in summer 2004

Distinguishing Features:

The residence in Medina , WA is receiving a Type III: Savannah two-layer system green roof. Approximately 2,000 square feet at the garage and approximately 4,000 square feet at the residence will be green roof. The system consists of (from the bottom, up) a 2Ó granular drainage layer, 4Ó of lightweight growth medium, plants, peat moss, and a jute net over the top.

The plant list includes plugs of grasses, sedges, carex, and hand-broadcast seed. The seeds have been obtained from Germany to Oregon. There is a 3' strip of blue oat grass and beach strawberry plugs at the exterior margins. Crushed granite is being used at the exterior margins, and crushed marble is being used in the interior margins of the roof garden.

A temporary irrigation system is being used 5-6 times a day for about two minutes each time to keep the seed bed moist throughout the germination process. The roof is designed to need no irrigation or fertilizer once established. Teufel Landscaping will maintain the roof plantings for 2 years on this project, but the maintenance is quite minimal (bi-weekly check ups, with almost no Ôwork' associated with it).
