Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum Winner of the First National Green Roof Infrastructure Conference Award for Retrofitted Intensive Green Roof Roofmeadow® Types III: Savannah IV: Meadow 1 Irrigation: (III) Capillary fabric and (IV) Base-level trickle irrigation Size: 2,000 square feet Client: Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum Location: Chicago, IL Roofscapes Contractor: Church Landscape, Inc.* Landscape Architect: Conservation Design Forum Architect: Perkins and Will Architects Status: Completed Spring 2002 Distinguishing Features This small, but intricate award-winning roof landscape has been added to an existing terrace of the Museum. Over a length of about 150 feet, the vegetated cover progresses from a ‘pocket wetland’ through a meadow-like area, and finally to an ‘upland zone;’ complete with a tree. Except at the ‘upland’ area, where the media rises to a depth of 18 inches, the typical profile depth is less than 8 inches deep and weighs less than 45 pounds per square foot. The design incorporates Type III: Savannah and Type IV: Meadow 1 Roofmeadow® systems. A varied plant list adds interest to the landscape which can be viewed from the Museum’s ‘catwalk.’ * Check the Network Area for a current list of Chicago area contractors
